Thursday swimmingly March 19th

This clay turtle was a gift from children heading to Kindergarten years ago. It's clear how important Mort has been to children and families over many years. Today is Thursday. Mort seemed pretty happy being in his tank today. He ate a lot of his food right away. Or so I thought. Then I realized it was caught in the new log. So, I took it out for a bit so he could get to the food. He's doing what he always did at the Center - hanging out under the waterfall from the water filter. You might not know it, but he would swim over every time new water was poured into his tank to fill it up again. Maybe it's a little like taking a shower. Here is one more swimming video. They're very relaxing to watch.

Rescuing Mort on Sunday March 14th

On Sunday we found out that we were going to be closing the Center. I had thought the need to move him might come up, but had no idea it would happen this fast. A tank was ordered to come in later in the week. I needed a solution fast! We went with cardboard box transport to Rubbermaid tub at my house. At least I had that and the filter already. Walking around the yard. It's getting warmer!

Mort continues to enjoy walking around outside. There's a fence and gate at the top of this photo. Mort likes to go under it on his walks, but he doesn't fit, so I open it to let him through. He goes out when it's warm enough, but not TOO warm. So, at least 70 degrees, but not above 90 degrees. The three videos below are Mort walking all the way around the old willow tree. He seems to like going off into a protected spot sometimes, such as behind some plants. Once, he started to go behind a stone slab and had to be retrieved. I can't let him go places I can't get him back out of. Here's Mort heading into some plants. Is he just walking? Or trying to get out of the sun? Mort walked past Bloodroot, not yet blossoming. Then past the Mayapple, now with leaves opened up. And past the Trillium, white flowers open in the middle of the three leaves. And past the False Solomon's Seal, which must look like trees from Mort...
